The Arctic Circle Trail - A Salute to Cairns
A photographic walkthrough of the Cairns of the Arctic Circle Trail in Greenland
On morning one, we took care of mailing a bag with some excess clothes and other valuables through to our destination. Then we took a short taxi ride down the coast and were dropped at the side of a dirt road in Kellyville.
There was no signage to indicate the trailhead as one might expect. We eventually spotted the first of many cairns with a weathered red semi-circle painted. These would be our guiding light, marking our way for the next 10 days.
I couldn't get enough of these. Some are said to be quite ancient, marking a historic hunting trail. Like the logbooks of the ACT, these Cairns have a special place in my heart:
From navigation aid, to a good excuse for a water break. There must have been several hundred cairns along our route.
I hope you enjoyed this salute to the humble cairn!
