Dog and Wellness

Dog and Wellness

I'm a recent dog convert. Growing up I think every kid wanted a dog. In my house the response was always the same - too much work, too much of a commitment, too much money.

I never did wear my parents down. Back then I also begged them to let me get a mohawk haircut and my mom always said I could once I was 18 and she didn't have to look at it.

It took me a little longer than 18 but when I turned 40, I got a goldendoodle named Juno and have never regretted it. A dog is all those things my parents said. They're a lot of work, a lot of commitment but I focused on the positives a dog could bring into my life.

Regular Exercise - She's high energy and I'm diligent about walking her. I hear countless health and mental benefits to walking more, especially first thing in the morning.

Fresh Air - Just like the exercise its great for mental wellness, especially first thing in the morning. Breathing in the fresh air helps me get ready to conquer the day.

Companionship - Coming home, whether I've been gone for 5 minutes or 5 hours, I am welcomed home with gusto. I feel like a celebrity when I walk through the front door.

Social - I feel more approachable while out walking with her. People of all ages stop and interact with us while we are out and about. Neighbors are more likely to wave, strangers will say good morning.

Chick Magnet - Obviously, just look at her

De-Stress - Sure, she has caused some stress. There is still work, poop, walking in bad weather, barking at delivery trucks and anyone else walking by outside but overwhelmingly she helps regulate stress. If you've had a troubled day, pet a dog for 5 minutes and try to tell me that didn't help you feel better.
